What Causes Red Colored Pea Sized Growth Without Pain On Scalp?

My son has a pea size growth on his scalp which is soft to the touch but red with no pain. It has flatten out several times but is now getting bigger. He has gone to the doctor whom gave him a referral to a dermatologist but he has not been able to see one as of yet. Can this be a cyst or abcess.
