What Causes Red Rash And Pain On The Back Of Knee?

My 3 year old son knee keeps becoming painful. It s not constant it will come on suddenly and can t straighten his leg. It then goes away and he s fine for a while til it happens again. Maybe the next day or later in the day. He also gets a large red rash on the back of the knee but not sure if it s connected or not
