What Causes Red Spots On Chest, Stomach, Arms And Legs?

My son has red spots on his chest, stomach, arms, back, and tops of legs. He went to the doctor on Saturday and they said it may be viral and it might go away in a couple days, it's Wednesday and still there, just wondering what it could be? No fever, headache or sore throat, is this common??
