What Causes Red Swollen Bumps On Leg Which Has Rod Below Knee?

I have a rod in my left leg that extends down from the knee through the ankle (result of a tibia/fibia break many years ago). I have recently had quite a bit of pain in the leg and this week have noticed several red swollen, raised bumps around the leg, where the screws and rod are. Wondering what this may be
