What Causes Redness In Eye Along With Formation Of Crusts?

I wake up and one eye and lid are very red, takes a few days to overcome then it might appear in other eye, or might wait a couple of weeks and then it happens again. Have tried the polysporin drops but they hurt. Eye is crusted over in a.m. What could it be?
