What Causes Redness On Fingertips Of A Child?

We have a two year old boy with the pads on the tips of some of his fingers becoming a deep and causing him reasonable discomfort. One also started to look a bit like a pimple. Can you tell us what this is? Thanks Sorry, meant to say becoming a deep red color.
