What Causes Ridges And Indentation On Nails?

The whites of my nails are noticeably uneven and wavy. The actually edges of nails, however, are smooth and fine. I only cut my nails. I also have pronounced ridges and the odd indentation in my nails. My nails are also extremely hard. I'm wondering if this is a sign of anything?
