What Causes Running Engine Sound In Ear?

The past couple of days I have had a bad cold. Yesterday heavy sniffles, today dry cough. The problem, one that has not happened to me before, is that in my right ear it sounds like a small engine is running. Sometimes it is louder than others. Should I contact my MD?
