What Causes Scabs On Head?

my son (age 14) has light brown "scabs" on his scalp. they don't itch and he didn't even know they were there. I just noticed them. He swims 5x/wk for about 2 hours/wkout (Year round swim team). He doesn't wear a swim cap (Not sure if the swimming matter but thought I'd mention it)
