What Causes Seeing Flashes Of Light In Peripheral Vision?

Hi -- I am a 66 year old healthy female. I have been severely near-sighted since the age of six. Earlier today I started to see flashes of light on the outside of my peripheral vision. No pain -- a bit distracting. Any suggestions? Thanks- Claudia
