What Causes Seeing Greyish Lines In Vision?

my 82 year old father in law has diabetes. he just asked us for eye drops because he has a big spot on his eye, described as grey line on the top of his vision. What could this be? Is this something we need to check out now or can wait until Tuesday when dr office is open? Thanks.
