What Causes Severe Abdominal Cramps During Pregnancy?

My girlfriend is about 11-14 weeks pregnant and she just started getting really bad cramps. I've been researching and keep finding the information I'm looking for, kind of. She is not bleeding, just really bad cramps in her lower abdomin. Is it normal to last more than a day? Could the pain be due to more than one baby from the uterus stretching? I'm very worried and am not able to go to a dr.
