What Causes Severe Abdominal Pain Followed By Tissue Clumps And Swollen Cervix?

I was woken up in the middle of the night to severe abdominal pain. it was fallowed by what i thought was my period until i saw two clumps of tissue. my cervix was swollen and i was able to stick my finger in it. was this an early miscarriage?
