What Causes Severe Bleeding?

hi i am 21 and I have always had a normal period which usually lasts 4 days. On my first day I always start with spotting to know I have started my period. When i woke up this morning I stood up out of bed to use the restroom and blood started streaming down my leg, rapidly. Is this normal?
