What Causes Severe Cracking In Knee?

I saw a knee specialist and and she feels i may have caused minor damage to my ACL or my MCL, however i am still waiting on an MRI. Lately, it s been cracking audibly - A LOT - more than 20 times today. Does the cracking mean that it s healing? Or is it something I should be concerned about?
