What Causes Severe Itching All Over The Body?

My husband and I have both been itching all over for a couple of weeks now. I am a nurse and he is a paramedic. I thought maybe we had picked up scabies from one of our patients but am not sure now. We have applied permethrin creme at onset of treatment and a week later. I have washed everything (bed linens, clothes etc in hot water) over and over and over again and have even sprayed down the bed with permethrin spray multiple times. Nothing is helping!
