What Causes Severe Itching Around Anal Opening?

I m a 21 year old female and I have had severe anal itching for a month now. I though it was pinworms so I took some over the counter medication. I woke up this morning to find what appears to be several bug bites on and next to my rectum. They are itchy and painful. My crack is also red and painful.
