What Causes Severe Itching Under The Skin?

i am kept awake most nights by uncontrollable itching....feels like its underneath my skin..all over my body...i scratch so much i break blood vessels under my skin...i have tried calomine lotion etc nothing seems to work..it is really interfering with the quality of life ..what can cause this?
