What Causes Severe Leg Pain After Taking Amlodipine?

Dear Dr. Siegel: My mother has been taking amlodipine for 5 days, including the 2 days intraveneously in the ER (for very high BP) late last week. She has had SEVERE pain in her foot both yesterday and again today (gout). The ER doc had considered hydralazine but opted for amlodipine because it can be taken just 1x/day vs. 3x/day for the hydralazine. Could the amlodipine be causing a rise in uric acid levels which in turn is triggering this gout attack? She has also taken a diuretic (LASIX) and takes gout medication on a regular basis. Might hydralazine be a better choice than amlodapne in order to avoid gout attacks?? Thank you. Kindly, Christine
