What Causes Severe Mood Swings On Withdrawal From Smoking?

I am trying to quit smoking and after a day or two I become manic as in aggressive, racing thoughts, totally unstable mood. I haven't been diagnosed with bipolar however I have been on numerous medications for depression for about 14 years. I'm not sure what to do.
