What Causes Severe Pain Around Naval?

My 15 year old son arrived home from school with what he thought was severe gas pain. While going the bathroom the stomach pain intensified though he had a productive bowel movement. He continues to be in pain saying it is in the shape of a smile just above his navel. Though it doesn t seem to gravitate to the right I m not sure what else it could be other than appendicitis.
