What Causes Severe Pain In Ear Of A Child?

hello, i have a question. My son is 8 yrs old and the other night I took him to the ER because he was complaining that his ear was hurting. They said that he's got swimmers ear but, it looks like there's some white stuff kind of blocking the inside of his ear. I want to know what that stuff is.
