What Causes Severe Pain In Hip?

I have severe pain in my left hip. It started this morning. I thought I had just slept on it wrong and it was a little out of wack but as the day has gone on, the pain has gotten worse. It is most severe when raising it up and then lowering it back down. The pain is so bad it is excruciating to walk up the stairs.
