What Causes Severe Pain In Left Side Above Ribcage?

I have a pain in my left side right above my ribcage. It has been there for months and my doctor says its muscular. It has been hurting worse the last couple days. Today out of nowhere I felt like my body was on fire and then it quit but continued off and on but not as severe. Any ideas what caused the fire feeling?
