What Causes Severe Pain In Lower Back?

My friend has an area on her lower back that is aproxamatly 6 in x 16 that causes severe pain,she was told was nerve bundles, it was suggested that these bundles are similar in size to a golf ball and are usually the result of a surgery. I am unable to find any info on this subject or any remedies . Thank you
