What Causes Severe Pain In Shoulder?

I'm experiencing pain in my shoulder on the left side. It's sometime sore to the touch. I'm having difficulty washing the left side of my back due to extreme pain. I also feel pain when I lift my arm above my head. This has been going on for the past month, causing me to put a halt to my exercising. What do I need to do?
