What Causes Severe Pain In Thumbs Radiating To The Joint Above The Wrist?

Both my thumbs hurt, but my left thumb hurts more. It has become daily pain about a week ago. The pain starts at the joint at the bottom of the thumb and goes down to the joint just above the wrist. Salonpas helps but my skin gets very tender if I use them for more than an hour or so. Any ideas?
