What Causes Severe Pain In Thumbs?

Thank you. I have pain running down the outside of both my thumbs. It happens when I grip something or when I move the thumb across my palm toward my little finger. It feels like a shock of electric went down my thumb into my wrist. It is very painful. A few years ago I was told (EMG test) I had mild carpal tunnel. Could this be it? If so does this mean it is getting worst?
