What Causes Severe Pain In Upper Abdomen While Coughing?

im having pains directly on the side of my abdomen where my ribs meet the flesh. it hurts when i cough. i also have reason to believe it may be caused by alcohol because its been around for a while and it hurts more the days after drinking. any ideas on what it might be and how serious it is?
