What Causes Severe Pain On Mid Back After Stretching Backwards?

I was laying on my stomach and arched my back to stretch when I felt something grind or crunch in the upper middle of my back. Just below the shoulder blades and then extrem pain. Not able to bend over or twist side to side. What was the crunching I felt in my back bone?
