What Causes Sharp Pain In Lower Back?

I am having immense sharp pains in my mid to lower back region. It started this morning and has escalated from there. Also the pain occurs when I was driving and made a right turn and I had to pull over. Do you have any suggestions as to what this could be and should I go to the emergency room?
