What Causes Sharp Pains In Lower Left Side Of Hip Area?

Hi, I have sharp pains in my lower left side almost down to my hip bone. I have had blood when I wipe after a bowel movement, but no apparent blood in the stool. the sharp pains only for a couple days, the blood for about a month or more. I am 51 and slightly overweight.
