What Causes Sharp Prick Feeling Underneath Foot?

Hello, my father feels this sharp prick underneath one portion of his foot, near the toes. I have experienced this before and it is very irritating, but I do not remember how I got rid of this. What is this exactly and how may we get rid of this sharp unexpected prick pain?
