What Causes Skin Rash Along With Pain?

I have had chronic pain for almost a year now. It started with a TERRIBLE rash which was diagnosed as poison ivy, but did not go away with steroidal treatment. The rash finally went away, but the pain remains. I had another bad rash a couple of weeks ago, after prolonged sun exposure. Thoughts?
