What Causes Sore Red Spots On The Hard Palate Of Tongue?

Thank you for being available to ask a question. My 6 year old son has a cold & had slight fever last night, now gone. Today he is complaining of his hard palate being sore & dry feeling. It has small scattered red dots on it. I can't see his throat because he can't stand me trying to hold his tongue down...
