What Causes Sore Throat Along With Swelling In Glands?

Hello I have a sore throat and its bleeding. I do not have tonsils as I had them removed as a child. My glands have been swelling and then going down and swelling again.my temp rises and falls also. Im exhausted and this is going.on over 2 weeks. Im a 40 year old.smoker but haven t smoked since this started because of the pain. Can you help please. ..is it a virus?
