What Causes Sore Throat And Cough?

I want to know what sickness we have. First it started with a cough, then fevers that ran between 99.4 to 101. Then runny nose and lots of coughing. My oldest son felt the worse and felt sore and achy all over and was bed ridden for 3 days. My younger son and I have had all those symptoms, except being bed ridden and achy all over. Now I get this tickle in throat and have to cough. is it flu or a cold or something else?
