What Causes Sore Throat And Runny Nose?

I've been in to see local doctor's/nurses a few times over the past couple months complaining of a sore throat and runny nose. They tell me I have allergies and so they put me on medicine that makes me feel a little better at first, and soon after leaves me feeling just as miserable as before. I'm sick of the same diagnoses, I don't want to hear "it's probably just allergies." I want an answer...What is wrong with me?
