What Causes Sore Throat And Swollen Tonsils?

I have a sore throat and had just looked in my throat my tonsils have been swollen for the last six months and six months ago had white ball on them, this time around they just have crater-like holes in them. What is wrong? I have also had a headache for the last four days what do you think this is for and are they related?
