What Causes Sore Throat And White Spots On Back Of Throat?

I have a sore throat. I looked at it with a flash light and mirrior. I see some white spots in the back and I have an annoying hard cough that makes my throat hurt more and my right ear feels heavy like its plugged up. Should I see a doctor or wait for it to heal on its own?
