What Causes Sore Throat, Headache And Swollen Tonsil In A Child?

Our 9 year old has had a headache for 2.5 days and started complaining of a sore throat last night. His tonsils are swollen and there is a large, puss filled sore on each tonsil. Other than that, throat looks fine. Does this sound more like tonsilitis or strep to you?
