What Causes Sore Throat,swelling Of Throat And Chest Pain?

I have had flu symptoms and an unbearably sore throat I ve taken cold and flu tablets and strepsils but its not working for my throat at all. I can see my throat is swollen it hurts down to my chest. Is there anything I can do to relieve the pain and do I need to see my gp?
