What Causes Soreness And Swelling In Tonsils Along With Muffled Ears?

For about a week now I have been waking up with swollen tonsils/sore throat that hurts every time I swallow. It also feels as though there is fluid in/near my ears, as there is slight pain in that area when I swallow as well. By mid-day this has usually gone away, only to happen again the next morning.
Only occasionally have I been sneezing, coughing, or had phlegm.
Any ideas what this could be?
