What Causes Soreness In Nipples?

I have noticed a couple of days ago that my nipples were a little bit sore, but as it is something normal before my periods I didn't bother. However, 2-3 days ago I noticed they are keeping hard all the time. What could be the cause of it as I am sure I am not pregnant.
