What Causes Soreness On Top Of The Foot After An Injury?

Hi, I fell and twisted my ankle yesterday. Initially, I had a lot of pain but it died down after ice and rest. Now it is sore on top of the foot when I try to bend it or put weight on it. I have no swelling or bruising. Just wondering if it is fine to carry on with rest or should I be getting it xrayed.
