What Causes Sour Body Odor?

My newly had boyfriend smells sour. He weighs around 300 lbs. He knows he's over weight, but not sure if he realizes he has a slight sour smell. It isn't strong, yet clearly a smell. How do I help him with his problem in a gentle way and will the problem go away once he starts to shed the weight?
