What Causes Spotting Before Periods?

Hi, I have been spotting before my period for a couple of years now. I successfully had a baby in 2009 after our first try. I also spotted for thre days just as I found out I was pregnant with our 2nd. (I lost this baby at 21 weeks). I'm spotting now day 25 with one timy clot. I'm so anxious whats going on?
