What Causes Spotting Between Periods?

Ive never had a irregular period. My husband and have been trying for the last year to get pregnant. I started my period dec 23, ended 25. Then jan 3, 4 Ive had spotting. My periods are usually 5-6days long. My questions are what are some of their reasons for this
