What Causes Spotting Between Periods?

I skipped my period pills and began the next pack of my birth control in attempt to skip my period this month. However, I've been moderately spotting since then. It has been 13 days. How do I stop the bleeding? Could I be pregnant? Is my birth control still effective? What do i do?
