What Causes Spotting Of Blood In Women?

Hi, I have been spotting for four days (since the third)...but today I don't see any spotting at all. I took a home pregnancy test, but it was negative. I have been really stressed with finals at college, and now worrying about my period (or lack-thereof). Should I see a doctor, or could this just be old period blood? Should I expect a period soon?
